About the event

Presented by: Professor Pauline Norris and Pharmacist Kasey Brown

Pauline Norris is Professor of Social Pharmacy at the School of Pharmacy, University of Otago. She has worked with Pacific colleagues on studies of medicines use, supervised Pacific students doing research, and been the School of Pharmacy’s support person for Pacific students for many years.

Kasey Brown is a clinical Pharmacist of Samoan descent. She is the Pacific Advisor to the School of Pharmacy Otago and has recently finished up as a Clinical Pharmacist at Wellington Hospital and is moving to Gisborne Hospital. Kasey founded the NZ Pacific Pharmacy Facebook Group which she is currently working on to make an official Association with other members. One of Kasey's main passions is to bridge the gap in health disparities between Pacific Islanders and the rest of the NZ population by education and empowerment to the communities and health professionals.

Course Information:

On completion of this course, pharmacists will be able to:

  • Understand the variety of Pacific nationalities and cultures within NZ
  • Describe patterns of ill-health within the Pacific communities
  • Identify the importance of family and religion in Pacific culture
  • Understand the possible challenges in accessing medicines (and the health system) in NZ
  • Identify tools/suggestions for improving interactions with our Pacific communities

Assessment:

Pharmacists must achieve an 80% pass mark in order to complete the course.

One learning package must be purchased for each individual to complete the course.

Group 2 points will be available. Exact amount to be confirmed.

Pre reading is not assessed. Allocate Group 1 points based on one point per hour.
