About this learning module

Professor Nicola Dalbeth is a specialist rheumatologist who holds dual appointments at Auckland District Health Board and the University of Auckland in Auckland, New Zealand. She leads a programme of gout research at the University of Auckland. Aligned to this work, she has led both national and international initiatives to improve gout management, focused on advocacy, destigmatization, and education. She served as a member of the Core Leadership Team for the 2020 American College of Rheumatology Gout Management Guidelines.

Susan Reid is a director of Health Literacy NZ Limited. She has been interested in gout for many years since the 1990s when she worked at a pulp and paper mill in Kawerau in the Eastern Bay of Plenty where many of the men had gout. In 1997 Susan had her first gout attack and was able to self- diagnose herself based on the men's descriptions of their gout. Susan continued to learn about gout joining the Maori Gout Action Group ( now Gout Action Aotearoa) based in in Counties Manakau. In 2013 Susan led a health literacy research project into gout which included the development of a resource To Stop Gout.

In 2021, Susan is working on a number of gout projects. Health Literacy NZ has been funded by PHARMAC to update To Stop gout with a new resource being available by the end of 2021. Health Literacy NZ is also working on a project with Health Navigator NZ and 10 ProCare primary care practices in Auckland to develop a resource that that can be used in other primary care practices to improve equitable outcomes for Māori and Pacific peoples with gout. Health Literacy NZ has also been working with He Ako Hiringa in relation to their resources around gout.

Susan continues to work on changing community and health professional beliefs' about gout with a goal to address the significant inequities in gout in New Zealand

Course Information:

Upon completion of this training pharmacists will be able to:

• Describe the epidemiology of gout in New Zealand
• Explain the principles of gout treatment, treatment targets, allopurinol prescribing, issues around colchicine prescribing, role of life-style modification and patient education.
• Describe inequality and inequity in gout
• Describe and address common misconceptions, communication strategies, and unconscious bias.
