In 2002, the NZ law changed to allow pharmacists to supply levonorgestrel emergency contraceptive pills. Pharmacists must be accredited to supply ECP according to standards from the Pharmacy Council.

The aims of this training are to examine the clinical aspects of emergency contraception and to prepare the pharmacist for the supply of the levonorgestrel emergency contraceptive pill (ECP).


Learning Objectives:

Upon completion of this course, pharmacists will be able to:

  • Explain the menstrual cycle
  • Describe the ‘fertile period’
  • Identify when patients may require EC to avoid unintended pregnancy
  • Identify methods of EC available in New Zealand
  • Explain the mode of action and side effects associated with currently available methods of EC in New Zealand
  • Explain the effectiveness of currently available methods of EC
  • Explain effective methods for counselling women in ongoing contraception & STI prevention
  • Identify other available methods of contraception and explain their mode of action, length of use and possible side effects
  • Identify when referral to other services is required

      Obtaining Accreditation

      Pharmacists must achieve a 100% pass mark in Part A and Part B in order to attain accreditation. Once accreditation has been attained a Certificate of Completion of Training will be provided.

      One learning package must be purchased for each individual accreditation.

      This learning consists of a 1-hour webinar, supplementary readings, a multichoice assessment and a scenario-based assessment.

      This learning activity has been accredited by PSNZ Education (Professional Development and Training) for 3 hours of professional learning and is suitable for inclusion in a pharmacist’s records for Continuing Professional Development (CPD) purposes.

      This accreditation training is only suitable for pharmacists in New Zealand with a full Annual Practicing Certificate (in the pharmacist scope) from the Pharmacy Council of New Zealand.
