This course has been developed to increase awareness of the issue of Substance Impaired Driving (SID) in NZ and how to address this issue with patients and minimise the risk of accidents.

Pharmacists and pharmacy staff dispense, supply and counsel on prescription and over the counter medication every day. Pharmacists can save lives by recognising and discussing the risks of driving while potentially being impaired by the side effects (or combined effects of multiple) of medication with patients.


Course Information and Learning Objectives:

On completion of this course, pharmacists will be able to:

  • Discuss how SID is an issue in NZ
  • Describe what substance impaired driving means
  • Identify the class of medicines which can contribute to SID
  • Identify symptoms of SID
  • Describe factors which can contribute to SID?
  • Discuss the consequences of SID
  • Discuss the impact of SID for the patient
  • Describe strategies that health professionals can use to prevent SID
