Pharmacy Action Plan

PSNZ is taking a lead responsibility for many actions in the Ministry of Healths Pharmacy Action Plan, on behalf of the sector and working with other pharmacy sector organisations towards successful implementation by 2020.

The Pharmacy Action Plan is divided into 4 Focus areas and 4 Tools for Change;

The Four Focus Areas are; Population and personal Health, Medicines Management Services,Minor ailments and referral, and dispensing.

The Four Tools for Change are; Leadership,smart systems,Workforce,regulation.

Actions for the Society include; Promoting pharmacists as a trusted source of information on health and medicines,promoting and supporting the uptake of integrated models of care, promoting the role of pharmacist prescribers to other health professionals and the public.The focus area of medicines management services identifies the implementation of the NZ National Pharmacist Services Framework.

Tools for Change have a strong emphasis on leadership from the pharmacy sector. Leadership is being coordinated by the pharmacy sector body of the Heads of Professional Organisations and Schools of Pharmacy.(HOSPOP). This body includes the heads of PSNZ,Pharmacy Guild, NZHPA,Schools of Pharmacy Otago and Auckland, Maori Pharmacist Assoc, Clinical Advisory Pharmacists,and Pharmacy Council NZ.

This group has met and discussed and agreed lead accountabilities for its participants in the actions and tools for change of the Pharmacy Action Plan.

The Society is noted as responsible for developing a Pharmacy Accuracy Checking Technician training programme, rolling it out nationally and working with the Guild and NZHPA to support uptake of roles. It is also charged with developing peer networks to support pharmacists taking on new clinical roles. The Society and the Guild will lead actions to strengthen the leadership capacity and capability of the pharmacy workforce to drive greater integration across the health and social sectors.
