This training has been specifically developed to provide pharmacists with an understanding of the medicine used for abortions, changes in abortion legislation, safe areas and support. Content includes information on Mifepristone and Misoprostol, how they work, side effects, interactions, contraindications, risks and complications. The module will also cover how to support women who are prescribed this medicine and when and where to seek help.

There is a comprehensive module about conscientious objection including the pharmacist's and patient's rights, the pharmacist's professional responsibility and options.

Course Information

This course consists of 5 modules:

1. Updated law. The reasons for change, Safe areas

2. Conscientious Objection - your rights and responsibilities

3. Everything you need to know about mifepristone and misoprostol

4. Pain management - evidence for and against

5. The pharmacist's role and drug counselling support

Learning Objectives

  • Identify the updated regulatory and funding environment around abortion services
  • Recognise the parameters of abortion services for a pharmacist
  • Recognise both their and the patient's rights, the principles of conscientious objection and how they relate to abortion services
  • Meet their professional obligations regardless of their ethical views
  • Recognise the mechanism of action and indications for mifepristone and misoprostol
  • Provide patient information about expected outcomes, side effects and red flags for referral
