Two respiratory physicians will take you through this COPD Programme.

You will cover the basics of COPD including diagnosis, progression of disease, complications and prognosis.

You will learn about aspects of COPD treatment (pharmacological and non-pharmacological) and symptom control.

You will discuss exacerbations and management plans and look at the needs of the patient with end stage COPD.

This is an 8 week online Programme planned to run through to 3 September 2017. You will also have assessments to complete throughout the Programme.

Note: This is a repeat of last years very successful and enjoyed programme.

Dr Bronwen Rhodes is a general respiratory physician at Christchurch Hospital and clinical senior lecturer at the Christchurch School of Medicine. She looks after patients with COPD on the hospital wards and in an outpatient setting. Bronwen finished her respiratory training in New Zealand and then completed clinical fellowships in Perth and Toronto. Her other respiratory interests include pulmonary hypertension and tuberculosis.

Dr Conroy Wong is a respiratory physician and Clinical Head of Respiratory Medicine at Middlemore Hospital. He has a special interest in bronchiectasis and asthma. His other interests include COPD, Lung Cancer, Lung Infections, Interstitial Lung Disease, Pulmonary Embolism and Pleural Diseases.

Learning Objectives:

On completion of the Module 1 participants will be able to:

  • Describe the definition of COPD and how COPD is diagnosed (spirometry).
  • Explain how COPD is classified (GOLD criteria).
  • Describe the prevalence of COPD in NZ and be able to identify groups at higher risk of COPD.
  • Identify the different progression patterns of COPD and factors that may influence this including smoking and COPD exacerbations.
  • Discuss others diseases that often coexist with COPD and contribute to morbidity.
  • Describe the symptoms caused by COPD and know how to identify the very unwell patient.

On completion of Module 2 Optimising Inhaler Treatment, participants will be able to:

  • Discuss the current and new inhaled treatments
  • Describe the use of the devices
  • Explain the role of inhaled steroids.

On completion of Module 3 participants will be able to:

  • Describe the management options for the breathless COPD patient.
  • Discuss COPD exacerbation management and the importance of a COPD action plan.
  • Identify the indications for oxygen in COPD.
  • Discuss the importance of non-pharmacological management in COPD including pulmonary rehabilitation, exercise, nutrition and psychological support.
  • Describe the importance of identifying patients with end stage COPD and the role of palliative care in this group.

Assessment:

Pharmacists must achieve a pass mark in all assessments in order to attain completion. Marking will commence after the closing date for assignments and completion advised thereafter (as these require manual marking).

One learning package must be purchased for each individual.

Group 1: Up to 7.5 points for recommended readings.

Group 2: 10 points for successful completion of all assessments.
