Developing Leadership Capability

Leadership development is;

  • Contextual – the capabilities, beliefs, and values leaders need are shaped by the sector, and individuals, strategic direction and organisational context.
  • A long term process that is supported by strategically planned on-the-job experience and learning opportunities, feedback, coaching, performance management, succession planning, as well as targeted training experiences.

Leadership development research shows that on average 70% of all development happens on the job, through experience, 20% occurs as a result of the impact people have (e.g. good and bad leaders, role models, coaches etc.) and 10% through training and education.

Much has been written about what leadership is. The Pharmaceutical Society of New Zealand has researched internationally and interviewed leaders in New Zealand to identify this pathway to a recognised leader in the pharmacy profession.
