Dr David Branford, a UK pharmacist currently working in NZ for 9 months with Waitemata DHB. His PhD topic was antipsychotic drugs. Dave is a Mental Health Commissioner in the UK with extensive experience in mental illness and intellectual disability.

What do you think when someone walks into your premises with prescription for an antipsychotic drug? Lock the doors? Panic alarms?  Think again, forget your preconceptions. Schizophrenia is a severe but treatable illness. How well people remain will largely depend on the effectiveness of the drug treatment and the nature of the local supports. You need to be able to recognise when the person is not well and who to contact. Listen in and gain a better understanding of the illness of schizophrenia, the many uses of antipsychotic drugs and what to look for when doing a medicine review for a patient taking antipsychotics.

Bipolar Disorders

Imagine the elation of winning the lotto followed by the depression of Monday morning magnified ten times over. Some sufferers even have that on a daily basis! Bipolar affective disorder, previously known as manic depressive psychosis, is a severe and poorly understood mental illness. It has a similar prevalence to schizophrenia and can also have a devastating effect on peoples’ lives. Lithium and the antiepileptic drugs can maintain people on an even keel but the challenge is to keep them taking the medicines.
