The
Membership programme offered by the New Zealand College of Pharmacists (NZCP) is
a post-graduate distance learning course in which an individual is required to
gain 400 credits either from completion of College modules or from other
approved programmes. This will equate to approximately 400 hours of study
usually completed over four years (maximum of six). This course is open to all
members of the Pharmaceutical Society of New Zealand. Individual modules may be
completed by pre-registrants and pharmacists who are not College members and on becoming an Associate member of the College the modules can be credited towards the Membership qualification.

The population of elderly people is increasing dramatically and with this, an increased awareness of the medical needs and issues/problems specific to elderly patients is required.

Clinical Module (ME16) in association with OMRO (Elective)
50 credits
It is based on attendance at OMRO and one assignment.
Prepare a case study based on one of the disease states covered at OMRO.

Compulsory Modules
There are two compulsory modules within the Membership programme. These are offered on a biannual basis.
MM2 - Practice Pharmacy in a Professional Manner (formerly called Law & Ethics) offered in 2008, 2010
MM4 - Communication Skills offered in 2007, 2009
Practice Pharmacy in a Professional Manner (MM2)
50 Credits
Audioconferences on July 30th and September 24th 2008. (NB. will next be offered in 2010)
Pharmacists are often required to exercise professional judgement based on our experience and knowledge of the relevant legal and ethical obligations. This then allows an assessment of the consequences of a range of decisions.
Presented by Dr Fiona McCrimmon, this module will offer a working knowledge of the legislation, Pharmacist’s Code of Ethics and patient rights - this forms part of Competency Standard One.

Elective Modules
The additional 300 credits required for Membership can be chosen either from NZCP Elective Modules or accredited programmes offered by other providers. One 50 credit elective module can be gained by accumulating short accredited activities. These credits must be in multiples of at least 5 credits per provider per annum within a 5 year period.
Respiratory Management (ME12)
50 credits
Recording of the audioconference held on 12 September 2007 . Continues to be available in 2008
Dr Shaun Holt and pharmacist Andi Shirtcliffe will present aspects of COPD and asthma; role for inhaled steroids, LABAs and SABAs; latest international evidence.
