Carina Walters

Carina Walters is currently a PhD candidate at the University of Auckland studying prescription and over the counter opioid dependence, and is a member of the University of Auckland Centre for Addiction Research.

Her previous role was as senior addictions pharmacist at Community Alcohol and Drug Services in Auckland, and she is a part time professional teaching fellow with the School of Population Health, teaching a postgraduate addiction paper.

Learning Objectives:

On completion of this course on Drug Misuse, pharmacists will be able to:

  • Describe the nature, antecedents and consequences of opioid dependence
  • Explain how and why populations of opioid individuals have changed in recent years, especially with respect to the use of prescription and OTC medicines
  • Identify the signs that indicate someone may be developing an opioid misuse or dependence problem
  • Recognise the current knowledge base with respect to the management of opioid dependence
  • Identify where to refer people needing support, or what support you can offer
  • Describe some practical approaches to managing opioid dependent patients, and preventing harms associated with opioid dependence

Assessment:

Pharmacists must achieve an 80% pass mark in order to complete the course.

One learning package must be purchased for each individual to complete the course.

Group 1: TWO point – for listening to the webinar but not doing the assessment, or
Group 2: FOUR points – for completion and submission of assessment questions (80% pass mark required).

Pre reading is not assessed. Allocate Group 1 points based on one point per hour.
