Medicines Use Review (MUR)
A Medicines Use Review aims to improve understanding and adherence to medicines by identifying and addressing factors linked to non-adherence behaviours.
Patients with complex difficulties in understanding and adhering to medications (and their family/whanau) receive personalised education and support to improve self-management. This is achieved through tailored education for greater understanding of what their prescribed medications are through an agreed action plan to address adherence issues.
PSNZ Education, Professional Development & Training, provide a training programme for pharmacists to become accredited to provide the MUR service.
The training Programme consists of the following topics
- Adherence and Medicine Management Services
- Effective Communication
- Documenting the MUR Service
- Maintaining Ongoing Quality
- Assessments (online assessments and undertaking a patient MUR consultation)
Medicines Therapy Assessment (MTA)
The Medicines Therapy Assessment (MTA) is a systematic, patient-centred clinical assessment of all medicines currently taken by a patient, identifying, resolving and preventing medication-related problems as well as optimising the effectiveness of medication treatment.
The pharmacist discusses aspects of adherence and use of prescribed therapy with the patient. This is summarised and a care plan based on therapeutic priorities is collaboratively developed with the prescriber.
The Standards for MTA were developed and set by a steering group of respected pharmacists and are endorsed by the Pharmacy Council of New Zealand.
To become accredited to provide MTA services, pharmacists must submit a portfolio documenting evidence against the Medicines Therapy Assessment Standards. Check the Eligibility Flowchart if you are interested in becoming accredited to provide MTA services.
