College Education and Training provide a training course for pharmacists to become accredited to provide the Emergency Contraceptive Pill, Nitrofurantoin (and Trimethoprim) and Selected Oral Contraceptives.
Emergency Contraceptive Pill (ECP)In 2002, the NZ law changed to allow pharmacists to supply levonorgestrel emergency contraceptive pills. Pharmacists must be accredited to supply ECP according to standards from the Pharmacy Council. The aims of this training are to examine the clinical aspects of emergency contraception and to prepare the pharmacist for the supply of the levonorgestrel emergency contraceptive pill (ECP). | URINARY TRACT INFECTION MANAGEMENT (Nitrofurantoin and Trimethoprim)Nitrofurantoin was reclassified in October 2022 to allow pharmacists to supply Nitrofurantoin as first-line empiric treatment of uncomplicated urinary tract infection (UTI). Trimethoprim was reclassified in 2012 to allow accredited pharmacists to treat uncomplicated cystitis in women aged 16 to 65 years The reclassification statement stipulates that Nitrofurantoin may only be supplied by a pharmacist if they have successfully completed the PSNZ training in the treatment of urinary tract infections. Please note that the new Urinary Tract Infections Management Accreditation must be completed to enable you to supply nitrofurantoin – even if you are already accredited to supply Trimethoprim. | Selected Oral Contraceptives (SOCS)
In 2017, selected oral contraceptives were reclassified allowing supply by pharmacists who have successfully completed the oral contraceptive training programme. The reclassification enables registered pharmacists who have completed this training to supply the following selected oral contraceptives (SOCs) under strict criteria: Ethinylestradiol (35mcg or less) combined with Levonorgestrel or Norethisterone. Levonorgestrel, Norethisterone or Desogestrel alone. |
